About Jabberwock
Jabberwock is an activity distinctive to Delta Sigma Theta. The first Jabberwock was presented in 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts by members of the Iota Chapter. In an effort to find some new method of raising money for her chapter’s scholarship fund, Marion Hope Conover of Iota Chapter conceived the idea of a variety show that would interest groups and individuals in producing skits, dances, and songs in competition for prizes of varying amounts. She called the kind of show Jabberwock, a title taken from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. The idea was successful and caught on with many other Delta Chapters. Jabberwock funds are earmarked for scholarships to be given by the sponsoring chapter to young women of promise and ability involved in public service projects. Additionally, the Jabberwock offers encouragement and practical help to the development of the participants. To date, the Dallas Alumnae Chapter has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to deserving students.
